Wanted: A New Way to Buy Training Content

Since 1995, we at RainmakerThinking, Inc.® have provided training in hundreds of organizations and worked with thousands of training professionals. Often they share their frustration over the standard operating procedures of the training industry:
* To acquire high quality customizable content, you must either develop your own content, or else buy content from a vendor, which is subject to restrictive licensing agreements.
* It is difficult to acquire content suitable for both classroom and self-paced training.
* The way most training content is sold, you have to commit to (and pay for) a certain number of trainees or a certain period of time, up front.
* Vendors of training content often require that you use the vendor for any content customization, train-the-trainer programs, certification, or classroom training.
* To keep training costs low, you usually have to buy hard copy off-the-shelf materials for a limited number of trainees and then buy more for each new batch of trainees.

So, we started asking training professionals, "In an ideal world, how would you buy training content?" Here's what they said:
* We want to buy high quality content, at a reasonable price, which can be used in a flexible way, without being subject to restrictive licensing agreements.
* We want content that is suitable for both classroom and self-paced training; that is suitable for both high tech and low tech delivery; and can be blended at will.
* We want to acquire content in electronic files. That way we can use the content off-the-shelf, customize it, or both; the content can be adjusted over time; the content can be delivered electronically; and we can create hard copy materials also.
* We want to be able to train an unlimited number of people over an unlimited period of time, without committing to a certain number of trainees up front.
* We want access to vendor support when it comes to implementation, customization, train-the-trainer programs, certification, and classroom training. But we don't want to be forced to use the content vendor for any of these things.
