When Do We Get Back To Business As Usual? (Part five of a five-part series on Managing Talent through the Downturn)

This is business as usual now: Highly interconnected, rapidly shifting, fiercely competitive global markets. Vicissitude. Wealth. Casualties. Ruthless organizations. Productivity. Downsizing. Innovation. Restructuring. Technology. Reengineering. Aggressive individuals. Opportunity. Job-hopping. Knowledge-work. Fear. Success. Welcome to the real new economy.

BE VISIONARY
Respect limits when it comes to planning for today, tomorrow and next week. But when it comes to imagining the future, be outrageous. Imagine the potential achievements of your organization, your team, and yourself: How much skill, knowledge and wisdom will you acquire? How deep and solid will your relationships be? How strong, fast, and accurate will you become? What will you create? How profitable will you be? Now triple it. And quadruple that. Don't hope for it. Be the mastermind and make it happen.

STAY FOCUSED ON THE MISSION
Vision is about the future, but mission is all about right now. Do you have a clear mission? If you are part of a team or an organization, does the team or organization have a clear mission? Start every day by reminding yourself of the larger mission of which you are a part. Look at your goals for the day. Don't just follow an empty to-do list. Prioritize the tasks and responsibilities that contribute the most to the larger mission. Set ambitious goals and deadlines for yourself every day, every week, every month, every quarter, and every year. Monitor your progress. Adjust your goals. Keep going.

PLAY YOUR ROLE VERY WELL
Accomplish every result for which you are responsible---very well and very fast---before seeking greater creative freedom, responsibility, authority, status, prestige, or rewards. Always be great in the role you have right now and you'll keep getting better roles.

KEEP BUILDING YOUR OPTIONS AND LEARN TO LOVE CHANGE
If there is one lesson we should all be learning these days it’s this: No matter how successful and happy you may be, don’t get too comfortable. You are only as secure as the number of options you have in your life and career. How many potential contingencies have you planned for? Are you learning new skills, knowledge and wisdom? Are you building deep and solid relationships? Are you getting stronger, faster, and more accurate? Are you creating value in your life and career? Grow. Remember that nowadays change is the only constant. You'll be significantly better off if you learn to not just like change, but love it. And the more prepared you are for change, the more you can enjoy it.
